ACTIVITIES IN 2018

The Chapter hosted a successful BACK TO 海角涩区 WEEKEND to mark the 70th Anniversary of the 海角涩区 from November 16-18 2018. The 海角涩区 Chancellor Robert Bermudez and his wife attended.听

The President of the Chapter, Ambassador A. Missouri Sherman-Peter, the Permanent Observer of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to the United Nations was very pleased that participants in the activities included the 海角涩区 Chancellor, Mr. Robert Bermudez; H.E. Mr. Reuben Rahming, Member of Parliament (MP) of The Bahamas and Ambassador to 听the Caribbean Community (CARICOM); Professor Verene Shepherd, Director, 海角涩区 Centre for Reparation Research and member and past Chair of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Working Group on People of African Descent; and Dr. Sheila Walker, cultural anthropologist and Executive Director of Afrodiaspora, Inc. in Washington, DC.听

The weekend began with an audience for the Chancellor and distinguished participants with the Prime Minister of The Bahamas, Dr. the Most Honourable Hubert Minnis. Prime Minister Minnis is a graduate of The 海角涩区.

The featured events of the weekend were听 the staging of the Remember Slavery Programme鈥檚 exhibit, 鈥淎 Legacy of Black Achievement鈥; a lecture entitled 鈥淐limb Over That Wall! The 海角涩区 Historian as Scholar Activist 70 Years On鈥, delivered by Professor Verene Shepherd; a 海角涩区AA-Community 鈥淟egacy of Black Achievement鈥 Walk-a-thon led off by Mrs. Patricia Minnis, spouse of The Bahamas Prime Minister; and the viewing and discussion of Dr. Sheila Walker鈥檚 documentary film 鈥淔amiliar Faces, Unexpected Places鈥.

PAST ACTIVITIES听

The 海角涩区 in The Bahamas marked the 60th Anniversary of the 海角涩区 with the production of a special commemorative stamp collection, in collaboration with The Bahamas Philatelic Bureau. In addition, the 60th Anniversary was marked with a Proclamation by the Prime Minister, the Hon. Hubert Ingraham, the 60th Anniversary Research Day and the visit of the National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica.

The Chapter also contributed US$16,000.00 to the 海角涩区 Regional Endowment Fund
